{First, I apologize for going back & forth between "face lift" posts & San Francisco posts. That's just what I've been up to lately & there will be more of a variety of posts once I complete my documentation of San Francisco.}
The purpose of our SF vacay had finally come! We were headed to ALCATRAZ. We were so excited for this day to arrive. I took a ton of photos. I will try to minimize the amount I post but that will (obviously) be difficult. You should be able to enlarge the photos by clicking on them. I will let the pictures do the talking for the most part. I can't remember everything that was said during the Audio Tour to even try to explain things. It is totally one of those things in life that you have to experience for yourself to get everything out of it that it has to offer. Our absolute favorite part of the Alcatraz experience was the Audio Tour. Basically, you walked through the main jail house & had an Audio of prison guards, inmates, family members, etc telling you history of the prison and their experiences while there. The prisoners' stories, especially, were captivating.
Alcatraz is considered a "Golden Gate National Park". Therefore, this island in the center of the Bay is a national parkland with historic gardens, tidepools, bird colonies, and bay views. The flowers & landscape were gorgeous and everything on the Island is protected. Reddington loved the birds that live there!
The fourth picture shows the 'ferry' that transports all of the Alcatraz workers and visitors back & forth throughout the day. You will see photos of the jail cells, shower area, intake, living quarters for the workers & their families, visitation area, library, Administration Bldg, etc. Alcatraz Island was like it's own little community. Some of the workers' families lived on the Island. Can you even imagine growing up on Alcatraz Island???
What a once-in-a-lifetime experience we had! It was definitely worth traveling to the West Coast for this & this alone.
"Break the rules and you go to prison, break the prison rules and you go to Alcatraz."
