Alcatraz Island: The Main Attraction
Hands down, the absolute main reason for this family vacay is Alcatraz Island. Since Nathan is quite the little dare-devil, he likes adventure. Is there any way to categorize Alcatraz other than stating it will be quite an adventure?! I can't imagine what it will be like. To step foot on an establishment that was in operation starting in 1934 & was once home to some of America's most notorious criminals definitely sounds adventurous & thrilling to me!
A little history taken from here: "The presence of infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud helped to establish the island's notoriety. To this day, Alcatraz is best known as one of the world's most legendary prisons... Alcatraz is now home to rare flowers and plants, marine wildlife, and thousands of roosting and nesting sea birds. Using this website, we pre-purchased our tickets for Thursday, July 7th. Since we arrive on Tuesday evening, I thought it would be nice to have Wednesday to start exploring the city & then visit Alcatraz the following day. My friend, Kristin, said that when they visited, tickets went fast. It was a great encouragement to go ahead & get them in advance. We board a ferry at Pier 33 between 8:40 a.m. & 9:00 a.m. for a 9:10 departure. Our total cost was $52.00 ($26.00 each & Reddington is free). Kristin also mentioned that there's not any food available on the Island. That means we either pay the outrageous prices on our ferry, pack a Lunch, or finish in time to have a late Lunch. My boys refuse to go hungry so I'm thinking that packing a few snacks/drinks, & a late Lunch back at the Fisherman's Wharf area will be in store!
